Silk scrunchies vs regular hair ties: what's better for your hair?

Silk scrunchies by Pearls Studios on the sand

Ever taken your hair down at the end of the day and found a sharp dent where your hair tie was? Or a few broken hairs wrapped around the elastic? Then this one is for you.

What a regular hair tie does

A standard elastic is made to grip, and it does that well. But all that pressure sits on one thin line of your hair. Every time you pull it out, it rubs and tugs a little. Over weeks and months, that adds up: dents, frizz and broken ends.

Why silk is kinder

Silk is a smooth natural fibre. A silk scrunchie spreads its hold over a wider, softer band, and it glides over your hair instead of catching on it. Your hair is held, not squeezed. Ours are made from sustainably sourced silk and are handmade in sets of three.

Held, not squeezed

Good to know: silk holds softer than an elastic. That's the whole point, but it means that for intense sport, a tight elastic is still the more practical choice.

Four easy ways to wear one

  1. The low pony. Loop the scrunchie twice for a relaxed ponytail that won't pull at your scalp.
  2. The bubble pony. Place three scrunchies down a low ponytail and gently loosen the hair between them.
  3. At the end of a braid. Softer than an elastic and it finishes the look. See a long flowy braid.
  4. The night-time bun. A loose bun before bed keeps your hair out of your face and gives fewer creases in the morning.

Why a set of three?

Because a scrunchie is never where you need it. One for your bag, one for your wrist, one on your nightstand. Choose soft Pearl, deep Midnight or warm Espresso.

Taking care of silk

Hand wash them gently in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, and let them air dry. Keep them away from direct heat. More in our care guide.

Questions we often get

Are silk scrunchies really better for your hair?

Silk is smoother than a standard elastic, so there is less friction and pressure on your hair. That means fewer dents and less breakage.

Can I sleep with a silk scrunchie in?

Yes. A loose bun or braid with a silk scrunchie is one of the gentlest ways to keep your hair together at night.

Do silk scrunchies hold as well as hair ties?

They hold softer. Perfect for everyday ponytails, buns and braids; for sport, an elastic is more practical.

How do I wash a silk scrunchie?

By hand, in lukewarm water with a gentle detergent. Squeeze gently, don't wring, and let it air dry.
